But wait, there's more! Sign up for a naturalist-led swamp walk, get wet up to your thighs, waist, or chest, depending on the route and water levels at the time of your visit, and learn about the Big Cypress in a way that mere reading or documentary viewing can't begin to touch. Everyone I've ever talked with who has done one of these walks comes away with a richer view of what South Florida really is.

A beautiful place to enjoy amazing art.

A must stop if you are in the area. Beautiful black & white photography. Nice self guided swamp tour.

small but very impressive, if you like the masterpiece of black and white photographs.

Big Cypress Gallery, as a quick visit, is stunning. Photography and other art by Clyde and Nikki Butcher and others is displayed and for sale, along with hard-to-find books about the local area and its history, fun t-shirts, and one-of-a-kind sculpture.

I also had the honor of spending a couple of hours with Clyde and enjoy his stories.

Yes, we recommend this experience to everyone who feels inspired by nature, and we will definitely be doing it again.

But wait.... If you like the place enough, and we do, rent the Swamp Cottage for a few days. We like the Gallery, people, and grounds enough that we had our wedding here, and a year later came back to reprise the experience, but this time just for the two of us. We got there in the evening, and immediately felt at home - can't explain why, just felt like the place welcomed us. Coffee in the morning looking down over the pond, watching Mama and all the little 'gators coming up on the lawn for a nice sun bath; bass and smaller fish in the pond; heron, ibis, egrets, and anhingas keeping an eye on the same fish; fat squirrels checking us out from the cypress tree right outside the windows. Canoeing on the East and Turner rivers, visiting the Shark Valley Nature Center, driving Loop Road, visiting Everglades City and Chokoloskee. Spend the evening around the fire, grilling whatever suits your taste on the gas or the charcoal grill, chat with the folks who are staying in the Bungalow, or possibly some of the staff who live on the premises. We finished up with stargazing, getting out our little portable 4" to hunt down faint fuzzies and open clusters in the Winter Milky Way, and pointing the circular fisheye lens up at the sky to capture the full horizon-to-horizon (with trees) dark sky experience.

A great gallery with some amazing photographs of the Everglades by Clyde Butcher. A "Must Visit" when you are in the area!
